A brand new type of tripod/monopod head is here…
I started photographing wildlife around seven years ago, it was a great excuse to take time out in the big wild world. I love to walk and I always have either my 400mm or 600mm lens on a strap with me, but I have never been brave enough just to connect the lens to my monopod and throw it over my shoulder, because I like to keep it where I can see it. My problem was getting my lens into the gimbal or ballhead when I spotted some wildlife. By the time I had wrestled the lens into the bracket and done the bolt up, obviously misaligning the bracket the first couple of times, the buzzard or hare would be on his way.
That is where the SpeediGimbal was born; I had looked everywhere for something to suit what I needed. In early 2023, I had the idea and within a few weeks I had the prototype made and I have been using it ever since. The design is so simple and the instant support it give has made it a winner for me. In one movement – from my carrying position – my camera is mounted on my monopod and I am ready to shoot.
After a little redesign the first batch was delivered and have been available to buy from the website for the last few weeks. Some have already sold and the feedback has been incredible. One friends simple feedback was “You clever little bugger”. That was good enough for me, followed by a cracking review by one of the photography review sites. The SpeediGimbal has now been delivered worldwide and I hope that with the aid of the SpeediGimbal Facebook page, to build a community of users. The SpeediGimbal was designed at first for use in wildlife and sports photography, but has also started to be purchased for use with birdwatching scopes. For that reason there will soon be the SpeediGimbal Mini, a third smaller and lighter, this will be the perfect device for macro on the move, lighter lens and scopes.
The device is made from Nylon 66, a hard wearing material and one that gets better as it wears, due to the design of the cup. Supplied with bolts and adaptors to suit any monopod or tripod. Installation and usage videos are linked below.
